Central Florida is currently winning the college football alternate uniform game with its recently revealed space-themed uniforms for Saturday’s homecoming game against East Carolina.
The mostly black uniforms for the “Space Game” pay tribute to the history during the space race, with a starry helmet that is just the coolest.
According to the team, the school has been involved with eight NASA missions, and in 2012, a planet discovered by UCF researchers was named after it.
The University of Central Florida was founded in 1963 as Florida Technological University, with the mission of supporting the growing United States space program at nearby Kennedy Space Center and Cape Canaveral Air Force Station.
Its motto, “Reach for the Stars,” represented the university’s promising aerospace education in engineering, electronics and other technological professions.
According to the team, the starry stripe on the helmet is a portion of the Andromeda Galaxy – the galaxy nearest to Earth – and is a piece of the largest image ever put together by NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope.
UCF’s website also breaks down the different constellations included in the stripe.
There is the horse, also known as Pegasus: “The symbol of UCF’s academic strives and pursuits,” which “represents the students of UCF as he was said to carry their hopes, their inspirations, and their poetry into the skies.”
The hunter named Orion – who is “always strong, always fighting” and “a symbol of resiliency on and off the field of play” – is among several other images on the helmet.
