Hubble Space Telescope exhibit on display at state museum

Just a few hundred miles in space is a magnificent telescope that is helping unlock the deepest mysteries of the cosmos, explains information on display near the entry of a new temporary exhibit on the Hubble Space Telescope mission in the North Dakota Heritage Center & State Museum in Bismarck.

The exhibit's focal point is a scale model of the Hubble Space Telescope. Visitors can learn how the telescope works and about Hubble's contributions to space explorations.

"In this exhibit you will explore this remarkable instrument: the Hubble Space Telescope. You will discover how it was launched, how it works, how astronauts service it. Above all, you will see how its images of unprecedented quality are shedding new light on the fundamental nature of planets, stars, galaxies, and the universe itself," the information also states.

The exhibit opened Sept. 27 and includes images and data taken from hubble of planets, galaxies, black holes and other celestial objects, according to State Historical Society of North Dakota information.

The Hubble Space Telescope was deployed from the Space shuttle Discovery on April 25, 1990. A section of the temporary exhibit is devoted to the James Webb Space Telescope scheduled to launch in 2018. The telescope is a joint project of NASA, the European Space Agecy and the Canadian Space Agency.

The exhibit in the Governors Gallery is free and open to the public through June 5, 2018.
