HARRISONBURG, Va (WHSV)-- The Hubble Space Telescope continues to scan our solar system, observing weather on other planets in our solar system.
Take Mars for example. Over the past few months a dust storm has been growing. The dust storm has been photographed over the past few years and is consuming the entire planet.
Further away in our solar system, Hubble has also been monitoring Jupiter's great red spot, which is a huge violent storm that is slightly bigger than the size of the Earth. Over the past several years scientists have discovered that the great red spot has been shrinking in size.
Dr. Bonnie Meinke, a content specialist in the Office of Public Outreach the Space Telescope Science Institute explained,
"Hubble continues to look at our solar system, it's our cosmic backyard so to speak. We get to see really fascinating stuff really close by"
Hubble will continue to scan the sky seeing out new information about the planets in our solar system.
NASA expects the telescope to continue to operate through the 2020s.
