AWS Public Dataset Program Publicizes Hubble Space Telescope Imagery for Scientific Research

A recently-developed Amazon Web Services data storage program has helped researchers and the general public access and process images captured by the Hubble Space Telescope in the past 28 years.

The Space Telescope Science Institute archived and publicized Hubble observation data through the AWS Public Dataset program, which supports the development of alternatives that can process public cloud-optimized datasets, making said data available to the public free of cost, AWS said Thursday.

STScI uploaded 110 terabytes of the telescope’s collected images to the Amazon Simple Storage Service in May to provide researchers with upgraded computing potential for their scientific studies.

“All public data from the Hubble Space Telescope’s active instruments are available for large-scale analysis on Amazon S3,” AWS said.

The Hubble data were added into a pool of other publicized science datasets such as those collected from the 1000 Genomes Project and images captured by the Landsat-8 satellite.

AWS added that the use of Hubble imagery has previously led astronomers, researchers and engineers to discover distant galaxies and nebulae.
