NASA Hubble Telescope: Space agency releases two INCREDIBLE new photos of distant galaxies - Express.co.uk

NASA’s Hubble Telescope has peered into the infinite universe for nearly three decades. Since its 1990 launch, Hubble has continually delivered iconic images of the universe, helping us unlock the secrets of infinite space. And the US space agency’s eye in the sky has now unveiled two new incredible images, shot from 56 million light years distant.

Two incredible new photos taken by NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope have revealed galaxies in all their glory.

The first photograph is of a glittering globular star cluster called Messier 48.

Messier 28 is only 18,000 light-years away from Earth, allowing Hubble to pick out Messier 28's individual stars in exquisite detail.

The second space photo is believed to include some 200 billion stars.

And the astronomical number of stars means it is as yet impossible to pick out most of the individual pinpricks of light in the photo.

Most of the stars within this elliptical galaxy are approximately 6 billion years old and some stars within Messier 29's 6,000-odd globular clusters are even older.

There is also a supermassive black hole lies at Messier 49’s heart, which contains the mass of 500 million suns.

So there is a lot of astronomical action to take in within just one photo, even if the image is then from 56 million light-years distance.

Messier 28 and 29 are named after eminent French astronomer Charles Messier, who first categorised them, although he was not exactly sure what he had found.

That is because stargazers in the 18th century could not benefit of Hubble's view from the heavens.

As Hubble orbits above Earth's thick atmosphere the space telescope is able to produce far sharper photographs.

In other news, the veteran space telescope has also beamed back photos chronicling a giant storm on Neptune.

And these images cold offer insights on the inner machinations of the poorly-understood ice giant planets, NASA said.

Like gas giant Jupiter's Great Red Spot, Neptune's Great Dark Spots are storms forming in areas of high atmospheric pressure in contract to storms on Earth, which form around areas of low pressure.

Scientists have now spotted six dark spots on Neptune. Researchers analysed Hubble's photos of the ice giant taken over the past several years and chronicled the growth of a new Great Dark Spot that became visible in 2018.

By studying companion clouds that showed up two years before the new Great Dark Spot, the researchers conclude dark spots originate much deeper in Neptune's atmosphere than previously thought.

The Hubble images also helped the space scientists understand how often Neptune gets dark spots and their duration.
