State-owned airport operator PT Angkasa Pura II (AP II) and ride-hailing app Grab are working together to offer an electric scooter service at Terminal 3 of Soekarno-Hatta International Airport to support mobility in the terminal.
AP II president director Muhammad Awaluddin said recently the Grab Wheels electric scooter service was an innovation to support operations and enhance customer experience at the airport.
“Two Grab Wheels have been undergoing tests at Terminal 3, but only to aid airport operations. In the near future, Grab Wheels can be rented by travelers,” Awaluddin said as quoted by tribunnews.com.
However, he stressed that before travelers are to be allowed to rent scooters, there should be standardization of both service and safety. He said 20 electric scooters had been set up at the departure and arrival terminal, both for domestic and international services.
The standardization is required in terms of the vehicle’s speed, tracks and age limits for the users, Awaluddin said, adding that Grab planned to deploy 30 scooters, charging Rp 5,000 (35 US cents) for every 30 minutes of use.
The users can activate a scooter by scanning a barcode with their smartphone.
Terminal 3 is the largest airport terminal in the country with a total area of 430,000 square meters and an annual capacity for 25 million passengers. Currently, personal modes of transportation at the terminal include segways, rollerskates and bicycles.(bbn)
