Indonesia Bars MacBook Pros From Checked Luggage on Aircraft - Jakarta Globe

Jakarta. Indonesia has barred 15-inch Apple MacBook Pro laptop computers from aircraft, either as check-in baggage or cargo, over the device's propensity to burst into flames.

However, passengers may still take the laptops on board in their carry-on baggage, but the devices may never be turned on, or charged during flights, the Ministry of Transportation said in a statement on Saturday.

The exception was made because it is still possible to monitor the devices inside the aircraft cabin.

"This is to anticipate problems with Apple laptops, particularly the MacBook Pro produced in 2015, which was sold between September 2015 and February 2017," Civil Aviation Director General Polana B. Pramesti said in the statement.

"It was identified as having the potential for battery failure, which creates a fire risk," Polana said.

The move follows similar bans last month by the European Union Aviation Safety Agency and the Federal Aviation Administration in the United States.

National flag carrier Garuda Indonesia has adopted an even stricter approach. The airline said on Thursday that it would not allow any model MacBook Pro 15 on flights.

State-owned airport operator Angkasa Pura II said it had instructed security personnel to double-check all checked-in baggage.

"Airport security will ensure that no specific model MacBook Pro enters checked baggage or aircraft cargo," Achmad Rifai, senior vice president of corporate secretary and legal affairs at Angkasa Pura II, said in a statement.
