Scientists at the Institute Of Astrophysics of Canarias (IAC) have announced the first discovery of a galaxy that dates back to the early history of the Universe and is unchanged since then. The galaxy, dubbed as NGC 1277 was discovered with the Hubble Space Telescope and is located 225 million light-years away from Earth, reported EurekAlert.
The astrophysicists presume that only one in a thousand galaxies is dating back to the early history of the Universe and presents the same characteristics since its formation billions and billions of years ago.
When Michael Beasley and Ignacio Trujillo from the IAC and the University Of La Laguna, respectively, noticed that they might have discovered such an ancient galaxy, they immediately called for help from the Hubble Space Telescope to confirm their discovery.
Hubble Space Telescope confirmed that NGC 1277 is an ancient galaxy formed in the early history of the Universe and is unchanged since then
The NASA’s space telescoped tuned towards the globular clusters surrounding the NGC 1277 galaxy to validate the theories of the before-mentioned astronomers and observed that this galaxy is only showing red globular clusters, a fact which indicates that this galaxy remained unchanged since its formation.
Red globular clusters are formed at the same time with the galaxies that houses them, while blue globular clusters within massive galaxies are formed due to mergers with smaller galaxies. According to scientists, NGC 1277 ancient galaxy is the first observed massive galaxy with almost no blue globular clusters.
The NGC 1277 galaxy is home to more than one million stars and is situated in the middle of the Perseus Cluster which is the highest density of galaxies near Milky Way, located at about 225 million light-years away from Earth. Thanks to its characteristics, this ancient galaxy is the best space object to study the features of galaxies that have maintained themselves largely unchanged since they formed in the early history of the Universe.
